BitArmor DataControl™

Protect and manage data enterprise-wide with one simple solution

Product Diagram

Protect the data, not the device.

By protecting data instead of devices, DataControl gives you something you simply can’t get from any other solution — the ability to truly control data throughout your enterprise. BitArmor™ helps you achieve that control by attaching Smart Tags™ directly to the data itself. Smart Tags travel with the data regardless of where it is sent or stored — so the policies you establish for data auditing, security, retention, and expiration stay with the data as it moves throughout your organization. DataControl’s unique software architecture ensures that the security of your distributed data is never diminished and that data is always managed, even outside of your firewall.

Smart Tags: protection and management travel with the data

BitArmor Smart Tags contain dynamic use policies that actually travel with your data, wherever it is sent or stored. With Smart Tags, you can attach policies directly to your data so it’s consistently protected and managed throughout your organization.

Smart Tags include:
      • Information audit policies
      • Data security policies
      • Data retention policies
      • Data expiration policies

A Smart Tag’s policies are checked by the BitArmor Control Agent each time its file is accessed for real-time security enforcement and data management. And because Smart Tags are transparent, you won’t have to make any modifications to applications, networks, or storage devices to realize full data control.

Control Agent: activate use policies throughout your organization

The Control Agent is a small, non-intrusive software client installed on computers that use BitArmor-controlled data, whether it’s a laptop, desktop, shared drive, or removable media. Control Agent software creates Smart Tags at the same time BitArmor-controlled data is created so data is protected and managed from its inception. The Control Agent activates the audit, security, retention, and expiration policies that travel with data in those Smart Tags and also performs data encryption.

Control Agent software is transparent to the computer’s operating system, existing software applications, and to users. Each time BitArmor-controlled data is accessed (or if unauthorized access is attempted) the Control Agent works with that data’s Smart Tag to activate applicable policies. It communicates with the central Control Server to verify access control lists, retention policies, and receive encryption keys. Even if a computer is not connected to the network, the Control Agent can still consistently enforce policies.

In addition to providing file, folder, directory, and volume-level protection, the Control Agent can be configured to provide Full Disk Encryption of a computer’s C drive.

Control Server: central management simplifies data security and policy administration

The BitArmor Control Server automatically manages the policies, encryption keys, and user authentication for data that is distributed throughout your organization. It does so without manual intervention, so administering the protection and management of your data is simpler than ever. With patent-pending KeyScrubber™ technology, the Control Server ensures that encryption keys can't be compromised in complex attacks like Cold Boot Attacks.

The Control Server communicates with BitArmor Control Agent software to fulfill requests for encryption keys so neither IT or end users have to manually manage encryption keys. It also manages access control lists to ensure consistent user authentication across your enterprise without manual intervention.

The Control Server consists of BitArmor Control Server software installed on a pair of hardened commercial, off-the-shelf servers attached to the network. It gives administrators a single console from which they can manage access, retention, and destruction policies throughout their organization.

Track and Audit Data Throughout Your Enterprise

The Control Server also stores a central audit log where user and administrator activity for BitArmor-controlled data is recorded. By tracking both normal and abnormal file access and generating data integrity check reports, BitArmor’s audit log is a valuable to for regulatory compliance audits.
